Implanon birth control? I have been thinking about getting this surgery?

It is suppose to last up to three years, but some of the side effects seem a little dramatic, such as hair loss, change of appetite, depression. Has anyone else used this form of birth control. If so, is it safe and how dramatic are the side effects?

  1. If you are worried about side effects, you could try going on the progesterone only (mini) pill for a few months before considering Implanon. Implanon works by releasing a small amount of progesterone into the body constantly, and some women experience side effects like irregular bleeding or migraines as well as those you have mentioned above. To "test" your body's reaction to progesterone if you have never been on the pill before, ask your doctor to give you the mini pill for a few months, and see how you feel on that - if you have side effects, then Implanon is not the best idea. If you feel fine on the mini-pill then go ahead and get the implant. (By the way, if you have been on any contraceptive pill in the past without problems such as hair loss, change of appetite or depression, then you won't have these problems with Implanon - the regular birth control pills contain oestrogen and progesterone, the mini-pill contains only progesterone which is what is released by Implanon)
  2. I am on my third implanon so i can share my experiences with you. The side effects that you are talking about, every prescription medicine has a huge list of possible side effects, even the pill and antibiotics. They have to write every possible scenario to keep patients informed. I had used the implanon twice then started taking the pill after i had a baby. The pill made me so depressed that i was suicidal. So horrible. I stopped taking the pill and went back to the implanon. I have no side effects at all. I absolutely love it. There are certain people that dont like, just as i didnt like the pill. Different things interact with everyone differently. If it doesnt agree with you, then you simply have it removed. If it does agree with you, then you have 3 years of hassle free contraception. I am totally terrible at remembering to take the pill every day, so this is perfect.
